Skincare lab on Soaps and Syndets.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Helloooooo~

There was no school last week for the year 1 because of the home based learning week, so there wasn't a lab experiment update but good news....

Another skincare lab update!! (YEAY~ ; It's the most interesting and fun lab experiment, at least in my opinion :P)

So for this week's Skincare and Cosmetics lab session, we got to make our own Soap and Syndet.
*Syndet is synthetic soap, and maybe we'll post up more information of it soon?

Some preview photos of the Soaps and Syndet we made, anyone want to try to guess which group made which soap?
(This looks like McDonald's curry sauce to me though.. :p)

So basically we got to make soap by adding various oils like Palm Oil , Jojoba Oil and  Castor Oil to Sodium Hydroxide with some food colouring...

Tadahhhh~

Soap is made!

This is our first time making Soap, so some of us got too excited over adding the colour and ... things can't be undone but we tried to make the colour as attractive as possible. ㅋㅋㅋ~ We have to leave the soap to cure for two weeks, before we can evaluate on the hardness two weeks later, so I'll be sure to let other of our admins to keep you guys updated ^^ This process of soap making is actually called Soapfonication.

A little more photos on our soap making process before i proceed on..

Syndet making
Syndet making is more of mixing different component to create something that is more gentle for the skin, but its a pretty fun process.. so some pictures before i proceed~

We had to put it over the water bath and stir the mixture and look over the thermometer, and though fun, our hands were kind of getting tired ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ~

So this was the finished syndet product, and unlike the soap that needed two weeks to cure, Syndet solidified quite fast and we have to be fast before it gets harden again in the beaker.

After the making of the syndet and soap, we got to test out the pH levels and test for its compatibility in hard and soft water. Because we were rushing there wasn't pictures for me to post but its a really fun process. Before i sign out, here's an interesting video we took when we had to use the magnetic stirrer that was really hard to use and we had to get our teacher, Mr Heng, to help us.

It's week 5 now and only 3 more weeks to MST and to all the DPCS students out there, good luck in the revision in MST! 굿빠이(good bye)!

xoxo,
Kai Ting, Year 1
